When I was in high school, my friend, Ryan, kept a 10 lb bag of smarties in his locker from which we would often grab a mid-day treat. I’m sure you can imagine how 10lbs of smarties can produce a lot of candy wrappers. Since we would eat the smarties in class, I would often stuff the wrappers in my backpack until I had a chance to throw them away. However, I accidentally started collecting them instead. But this was fine because I figured that one day I could use them to make something. I always wanted to find a way to sew with them and one day in 2018, I finally did. I made this absolutely hideous backpack that you see on the left here. I gave this bag to my friend Ryan as a memento. I have since made more-- but still arguably unattractive-- bags out of candy wrappers. On this page, I show how I made a fanny pack out of Valentine’s KitKat wrappers.
These are the wrappers I used for this bag. After collecting them, I disinfect them and then flatten them out by leaving them under heavy books.
Next, I trim off the excess from the wrappers which makes them easier to work with.
Then I tape the wrappers together. I usually tape them on the back of the wrappers, but sometimes I can get away with using clear tape on the front.
I use this thin furniture vinyl covering on top of the wrappers to give them some more shine and a layer of protection. I cut this out to be the same size as the pieces that I lay this on top of.
Here, I am layering the vinyl on top of a cut out candy wrapper piece. Underneath both of these, is a layer of canvas white fabric that gives the piece a structure.
I admittingly used a lot of tape in this project which I think is kind of underrated in the sewing world. When you sew something that is not washing machine safe anyway, you can really go off the rails, I think.
This is a glimpse at how I stitched the top part of the bag. Here, I am prepping the piece to sew on a zipper.
This is before I did the final stitch to attach the bag together.
This is the final bag. It is not super practical, and I had no reason to make this other than the fact that I could make it.
