As you may know from my Kit Kat Fanny Pack page, I have a large collection of candy wrappers at my disposal. Included in this are a lot of wrappers from Finnish chocolates that my mom gets from the Finnish based company she works at. I designed and made a very simple travel pouch design to use up some of these wrappers. To do so, I used the same sewing technique (that I go more in depth on) in the Kit Kat Fanny Pack page.
These are the candies from which I used the wrappers.
Since I made this sewing pattern myself, I thought it would be easiest to do so in Adobe Illustrator. This way, I could enter the real-life dimensions of the various sides and have them be exactly accurate. This also ensured symmetry and straight lines.
I used the Illustrator file to laser cut the pattern onto corkboard. For this particular bag, I find that tracing the pattern onto the fabric before cutting works best.
To construct the bag, I used a layer of clear furniture vinyl, a layer of candy wrappers taped together, and then a piece of sturdy base fabric. Again, you can learn more about this process here.
This is what the fabric layers look like once they are cut out. At this stage, I next sewed a preliminary boarder around the perimeter to hold everything together.
Once the layers are held in place, I sewed stitch lines down the bag to keep the layers from moving against each other.
Then, the easy part! This is when I sew the bag together and add a zipper.
