In high school, we had a book report project due once a semester. There was a lot of flexibility and we got to pick the book we read as well as how we wanted to present the book report to our classmates. For my final semester, I wanted to do a puppet show from the book Animal Farm. In order to put on the show, though, I wanted to have a little stage that had scenery and props to make the show come to life. So I created and designed a small (14x14x12") stage that was contained in a box. It had two working sets of curtains on a pully system, a barn with a working door, a small painting backdrop, and lap siding that I glued on myself.
This is the shell of the puppet house before assembly. I cut these pieces out with a table saw and jig saw.
After I assembled the pieces, I began decorating the outside. I cut strips of balsa wood with an xacto knife. I measured out where I would lay the strips and then I hot glued them down as lap siding.
I used some velvet fabric for the 2 sets of curtains. I sewed a sleeve at the top of the curtains in which I ran the pully string through. I created the pully system by running the string through a series of empty bobbins to where I could reach them from the inside.
I also created a little barn out of cardboard and strips of balsa wood. I attached a door using a small hinge. I also cut out a hole underneath the barn so that I could stick the puppets through the bottom and poke through the door.
I painted a simple sunset design on some paper for the background. I then glued this to the back piece behind the barn. I also painted the stage platform black. It is difficult to see here, but the puppets would pop up between the front stage and the stage in the back with the barn.
Finally, I installed a center piece with another set of curtains. Then I laid a roof piece on top that had a light attached to it.
