Since my Grampa Kenny died in August of 2023, my family has had me make a few different projects in memory of him. I've made some purses out of his clothes, aprons from his overalls, and I made Christmas ornaments of his Model-T Ford Truck since then. My family has a lot of young children and my Aunt Debbie said she wished some of them had the opportunity to get to know Kenny more than they did. She told my mom this concern and lamented that she wished she had a children's book about him. My mom was very inspired by this and immediately began writing. She put together a story about Kenny and his life very quickly. I offered my help to put an actual book together using the script she wrote. She gave me a bunch of pictures of Kenny throughout his life and I worked to fit them into the book. I used Photoshop to colorize some of the photos, enhance them if they were blurry, and to clean them up. I used Adobe Illustrator to trace the images to give them a "watercolor" effect, and I used Adobe InDesign to add text and format the whole book.
This is the full cover of the book. I made the front cover page using Photoshop and I designed this spread in Adobe Illustrator.
This is a photo of a farm that I used in the book. As you can see in the photo to the right of it, I added expanded the image and added a filter to make it look more like a painting.
This is what the page spread looked like using the picture. On the opposite page, I have the text that accompanies this picture. Since this is a children's book, the language is plain and simple and I used a big text in Times New Roman, which is one of the easiest fonts to read.Â
