Megamind from the movie Megamind
Me dressed up as Megamind
Since I spent waaay too much time on my Jack Sparrow costume the year before, I wanted to make a Halloween costume that was simpler so it wouldn't take up as much of my time. Megamind, apparently, was not the right choice for this. I ran into numerous barriers during this process. The first was that my big evil collar had a tendency to lean backwards since that is where all of the weight rested, especially with the cape attached to it. To fix this, I used some Velcro to attach it to my bodysuit. The second and biggest hurdle was the Big Bald Megamind head. I wanted it to be snug to my own head but not too tight that I couldn't get it on. I also wanted it to be smooth like skin and it was tricky to find something that was slightly flexible. To fit both of these criteria, I used an air-dry foam clay. Finally, I had some issues trying to figure out how to get the design on the front of my body suit. The suit was stretchy which meant that the design had to stretch too without cracking. I ended up using sport-flex iron on for this which worked for the most part.
The first thing I did was make the big evil collar. I didn't have a pattern, but I got it to work after several attempts. I sewed channels and put some wire in these channels to hold it up.
Once the collar was finished, I used a hammer and nail to poke holes in the pleather. Then I screwed in some small spike studs. I did this same thing on the gloves and the belt.
This is me planning out how to make a holster for my ray gun.
This is file that I designed for the lightning bolt on the front. I used my Cricut to cut it out onto blue sport-iron-on.
This is me ironing the Cricut cut out onto the body suit I bought.
To make the headpiece, I first cling-wrapped my head. Then I used a combination of a Styrofoam sphere, duct tape, paper, and glue to make the head shape I needed. Once it was formed, I rolled out some air-dry foam clay into a flat sheet and smoothed it over the headpiece.
This is a 3D object that I designed and printed to be the belt-buckle. I made a similar piece for the middle of the collar.
This is a design I made for the cape.
I got the cape design printed on some fabric. Once I finished the collar, I sewed it around the rim.
These are some of the accessories I made for the boots. I made similar straps for the gloves.
This is me sewing accessories for my belt. I actually cut this circular metal piece off of the boots I used for my Mirror Dress. Yay! I love getting a chance to repurpose stuff.
I found these boots at a thrift store, and they were perfect, but the wrong color. So, I painted them with watered down acrylic paint.
This is a progress pic. The only things missing are the boots and the studs & straps on the gloves.
This is me showing my grandma my finished costume- she is the one who taught me how to sew.
This is me and my best friend, Kaydee, with some prizes we won in a costume contest.
