You may have seen a lot of memes from the Paris 2024 Olympics including the moves from one Aussie break-dancer. The virality of Rachel Gunn (Raygun) made for a topical and recognizable Halloween costume in 2024. For this look, I made a pair of pants, a polo shirt, and a hat. It was a pretty easy costume, aided by the fact that I already kind of look like her.
Shirt and Sleeves
This is the design for the shirt I made in Illustrator. This includes the front, back, and sleeve and neck collars. I got this printed on 1 yard of sport spandex.
Raygun's shirt
This is the sleeve design I made. I printed this on a fat quarter in the same material as the shirt.
A close up of the sleeve.
I needed to make my own pattern for this shirt because it has unusual sleeves that touch the neckline. To make the pattern, I cut up this Culver's uniform shirt that I thrifted.
These are all of the materials I used to make the shirt.
This is how I cut out the sleeves.
This is how I cut out the front of the shirt.
This is me sewing on the sleeve collar.
This is what the sleeve and front looked like before I sewed them together.
For the logos, I made the designs in Cricut Design space and cut them out on to Iron-on materials. I ironed them on instead of printing them on the fabric so that they would be raised off the fabric instead of being flat.
This is what the various iron-ons looked like before I used them.
Once I placed the iron-ons in a spot that I liked, I ironed them into place.
Pants
This is the design I made for the pants. The two individual yellow boxes are for the sides of the pants. The strip of yellow boxes are for the inside of the pockets.
This is what Raygun's pants looked like.
These are the materials I used to sew the pants.
I had to be careful to line up the fabric so that the yellow side-strips were even and where I wanted them to be.
This is how I cut the pants out. I used a Simplicity pattern that I modified to be higher-waisted.
Once the front pieces were cut out, I used the extra yellow squares to make the pockets. To do this, I first sewed the squares to the front of the pants.
After that was attached, I sewed the back piece of the pockets onto the front ones.
For the waistband, I sewed the elastic to the top of the fabric and flipped it inward. Then on the front, I sewed 3 lines around the waistband instead of just one.
Hat
This is the fabric I used for the hat. I used the same spandex material as the shirt.
This is a reference picture of Raygun's hat.
This is the hat I used as a base and to make the pattern for the hat.
I made this pattern by holding paper on top of the hat and tracing it where I needed the seams to be.
I had to deconstruct most of the hat in order to sew the main body piece on and to sew the brim pieces down.
These are the main body pieces I cut out using the pattern I made.
The first step with the brim was to simply sew down the green base piece.
This is how I assembled the brim. Once I sewed the green base piece down, I had to carefully place the bias tape. I made the bias tape with leftover pants fabric.
This is what the main body and brim pieces looked like before I assembled them. Ignore the velcro piece. I ended up taking apart the one pictured here and using yellow fabric on it instead.
This is an incredibly small detail, but I colored and then painted this connector piece black. This is an original piece from the Adidas hat that holds the velcro in place in the back of the hat. On Raygun's hat, this piece is black.
This is the inside of the cap after I reattached the brim and before I sewed some of the main body piece down and added the velcro back in.
Final
Here is my final costume and me with some friends!
Here I am breaking it down
